Tent Types Guide

Before renting a tent, understanding the main types helps you pick the right one for your event, venue, and budget. Here are the five common tent styles used for weddings, events, parties, and construction.

Frame Tent

Best for: Events on pavement, driveways, decks, or uneven ground

A frame tent uses a rigid metal or aluminum structure without center poles. The whole tent is supported by its frame, leaving the interior open and unobstructed. Frame tents can be anchored with weights (on pavement) or stakes (on grass).

Advantages

  • No center poles — clear interior space
  • Can be set up on any surface, including pavement
  • Sidewalls can be added for weather protection
  • Modular — can be joined together for very large events

Drawbacks

  • More expensive to rent than pole tents
  • Heavier and more complex to install
  • Less dramatic visual appeal than pole or sailcloth

Typical sizes available: 10x10, 20x20, 20x40, 30x60, 40x60, 40x80, up to 60x200+

Pole Tent

Best for: Large outdoor events on grass or dirt

A pole tent uses tall center poles and side poles with tensioned rope guylines staked into the ground. The distinctive peaks create a dramatic, classic wedding-tent look. Must be staked — cannot be used on pavement.

Advantages

  • Iconic tent look with swooping peaks
  • Less expensive than frame tents at similar sizes
  • Typically faster to install
  • Looks great in photos

Drawbacks

  • Requires grass or dirt for staking — no pavement
  • Center poles can obstruct sightlines and floor plan
  • More vulnerable to high winds than frame tents

Typical sizes available: 20x20, 20x40, 30x45, 40x60, 40x80, up to 60x150

Sailcloth Tent

Best for: Luxury weddings, upscale events, photogenic venues

Sailcloth tents use a semi-translucent fabric (often cotton-poly blend) on a pole-tent frame. During the day, sunlight filters through softly; at night, interior lighting makes the entire tent glow. Premium wedding tent of choice for high-end events.

Advantages

  • Glowing aesthetic — lights up beautifully at night
  • Soft natural light during daytime events
  • Wood pole option for rustic/elegant feel
  • Highly photogenic

Drawbacks

  • Most expensive tent type
  • Limited availability in many markets
  • Still requires staking (pole-tent anchoring)
  • Longer booking lead time often required

Typical sizes available: 32x33, 44x44, 44x63, 44x83, 44x103

Pop-Up / Canopy Tent

Best for: Small backyard parties, trade shows, short events

Pop-up tents (also called instant canopies) have a collapsible aluminum frame with a fabric top. Designed for fast setup and takedown — usually installable by 1-2 people in under 15 minutes. Common brands include EZ-Up and Coleman.

Advantages

  • Cheapest tent option
  • Fastest setup — minutes, not hours
  • Portable for repeat use
  • No professional installation required

Drawbacks

  • Limited sizes (usually 10x10 to 10x20)
  • Less wind-resistant
  • Not suitable for formal events
  • Fabric often less durable

Typical sizes available: 10x10, 10x15, 10x20

Clear-Top Tent

Best for: Night events, stargazing weddings, greenhouse effect

Clear-top tents use transparent vinyl roofing on a standard frame-tent structure. Guests can see the sky during evening events; during the day the interior gets significant solar heat (not recommended in hot summer climates without HVAC).

Advantages

  • Unique aesthetic for evening events
  • Star-filled ceiling with no light pollution
  • Still has sidewall weather protection

Drawbacks

  • Greenhouse effect during daytime — can be very hot
  • More expensive than standard frame tents
  • Requires additional cooling for summer daytime events

Typical sizes available: 20x20, 20x40, 30x60, 40x60
